The Addington Fund is very appreciative of the financial support received from many charitable trusts and foundations. Grant-giving charities have had a tough time since the financial crash in 2008 as many rely on dividends from shares and interest from cash investments to provide their capability to award grants to Addington; although dividends have increased, interest rates remain very subdued. These circumstances make every donation received even more precious.
Every charity has a set of criteria within which grants can be made and may also have some geographical restrictions. Addington works across England and Wales but has the ability to hold and administer donations made for a specific county or for a specific piece of work. A good example of this is our recent response to the serious flooding in Somerset.
Core funding is an issue for every charity. Since June 2002 when Addington initiated a Strategic Rural Housing Scheme the charity accepted long-term obligations as many of the families we were starting to support would be relying on us for the rest of their lives; we had to be sustainable. Our business model is one of generating sufficient income from our own resources to cover all our day-to-day operating costs.
Latterly our staffing has increased to cope with a growing workload but also to avoid missing any opportunities presented to us. An additional member of staff causes a steep increase in operating costs against a continual increase in rental income. Grants towards core costs help hugely to iron out these increases in cost, thus enabling every general donation to continually enhance our ability to help more farming families.
Addington continually attempts to support its self. An Endowment Fund provides an income with which to provide rent support to families experiencing even more difficult circumstances. This can be due to ill health or personal circumstances out of their control. Reducing the rent or even giving a rent holiday for a few months can reduce the financial burden on a family at a very difficult time. The existence of our Endowment Fund balances our aims of having a sound sustainable business plan and meeting our charitable remit. Grants made to our Endowment Fund are invested in shares, and where possible in companies involved in the agri-food sector.
Addington has been very fortunate to receive some very large one-off donations from other charitable trusts, but we also receive smaller amounts on an annual basis. As we approach our fifteenth anniversary it is staggering how these amounts are adding up.
The Trustees of the Addington Fund are profoundly grateful for all grants and donations received and would gratefully welcome any support your Trust may be able to offer. We can be contacted on 01926 620135 or email firstname.lastname@example.org Thank you!
