Gamble charity lamb makes top price at Skipton

Ken and Hazel Gamble, of Brickyard Farm, Easingwold, were the latest farming family to donate a lamb at Skipton Auction Mart’s weekly Monday prime sheep sale in aid of national farming charity, the Addington Fund. (Mon, Oct 16)

It was the second charity lamb to go under the hammer as part of the mart’s recently launched initiative in support of the Addington Fund’s ‘Tup 1 Ewe’ fund-raising campaign, through which sheep farmers are able to donate live sheep through participating auction markets around England and Wales, and nominate the sale proceeds to the charity.

The single Texel-cross lamb from the Gambles went on to sell for the day’s leading per head price of £115 – CCM again waived its commission – to Hartwith’s Nick Dalby, buying on behalf of Kendalls Farm Butchers, which has shops in Pateley Bridge and Harrogate.

By kind permission of the Duchy of Lancaster and with the much appreciated co-operation of the Chaplain, we were again very privileged to hold our Harvest Eucharist Service on Sunday.  The Queen’s Chapel of the Savoy is a wonderful space, fill the building with our guests, regular worshippers and visitors, then add a superb choir and organist; as we started the service by singing the National Anthem you realise you are in a very special place.

The service as conducted by The Chaplain, Professor Reverend Peter Galloway, with Intercessions read by our very dear friend Geoff Dodgson, Chaplain to the Guild of Agricultural Journalists.  The sermon was given by Bishop John Flack.  John knew Canon Richard Addington as they worked together in Leeds at the beginning of their years in Ministry.  John became Bishop of Huntingdon before moving to Rome as the Director of the Anglican Centre from 2002-2008 and still travels across Europe to conduct Confirmation Services.  John retired recently as Assistant Bishop of Peterborough.

Addington Fund benefits from first charity lamb sale at CCM Skipton

Skipton Auction Mart has sold its first prime lamb under a new fund-raising initiative on behalf of national farming charity, the Addington Fund.

The single Beltex-cross lamb was donated by Craven Cattle Marts chairman Anthony Hewetson, who farms locally in Bank Newton, and sold for £135 to Alan Beecroft, of Countrystyle Meats Farm Shop in Lancaster.

The entire proceeds from the sale – CCM also waived its commission – went to the Addington Fund, which offers a vital lifeline and safety net to farmers in desperate need of housing or emergency funds.

It was the first charity to lamb to go under the hammer as part of Skipton Auction Mart’s new initiative in support of the Addington Fund’s ‘Tup 1 Ewe’ fund-raising campaign, through which sheep farmers are able to donate live sheep through participating auction markets around England and Wales, and nominate the sale proceeds to the charity.

The scheme, in which sheep sport purpose-designed rosettes so potential purchasers can clearly see they are being sold in aid of the Addington Fund, was devised by Craven Cattle Marts general manager Jeremy Eaton. He said: “Other vendors are welcome offer lambs at future sales for this extremely worthwhile cause.”

The lamb was sold on Skipton’s October prime show day, when Countrystyle Meats Farm Shop also claimed the prime lamb champions, a pen of five 42kg home-bred Beltex-cross from North Craven’s Mick Hewitt, of Giggleswick. Mr Beecroft paid the day’s top price of £138 per head for the title winners.

On the same day, Mr Beecroft, who is now a regular weekly buyer of primestock at the North Yorkshire venue, also took home a brace a prime cattle, among them the  second prize Blue-cross steer from Threshfield’s Charles and Richard Kitching.

The champion prime lambs have now gone on sale at the Lancaster Leisure Park farm shop, while meat from the prime cattle will be fully matured for up to three weeks to ensure it is in perfect condition for customers’ tables.

Mr Beecroft said: “Once again we are sourcing the very best meat that money can buy for our growing band of customers – top quality lamb and beef roasts, steaks, chops and all the other popular cuts. Absolutely nothing will go to waste.”

He added: “We were also keen to buy the lamb donated in aid of the Addington Fund, as it a very deserving charity that does sterling work on behalf of hard-hit farmers across the nation.”

Ian Bell, chief executive of the Addington Fund, said: “We always get tremendous support from livestock marts and farmers and this is a great start to the renewed impetus we are now giving to our ‘Tup 1 Ewe’ fund-raising campaign. Our thanks go to CCM, its chairman and the farm shop buyer. We can only hope others will take up the gauntlet on our behalf.”

Skipton-based Craven Cattle Marts has launched a new initiative in support of our Tup 1 Ewe fund-raising campaign.

Skipton Auction Mart was one of the first to support the ground-breaking scheme when it was launched in September last year, enabling sheep farmers to donate live sheep through participating auction markets around England and Wales, and nominate the sale proceeds to the charity.

Now, 12 months on, Craven Cattle Marts general manager Jeremy Eaton has devised a new idea in a bid to give renewed impetus to the campaign. It involves purpose-designed rosettes so potential purchasers can clearly see which sheep are being sold in aid of the Fund.

Mr Eaton explained: “The theme is that a farmer wishing to donate a lamb simply attaches a rosette to one sheep and we will do the rest commission free. We suggest prime and store lambs, but farmers may choose to donate from any sheep sale by attaching the rosette.  All they need to do is let us know ahead of each sale.”

Ian Bell, chief executive of the Addington Fund, which has its headquarters in Barford, Warwickshire, and offers a vital lifeline and safety net to farmers in desperate need of housing or emergency funds, has warmly welcomed Skipton’s new, forward-looking initiative.

He said: “Livestock marts and farmers have always been incredibly supportive of our charity and we are particularly grateful to CCM Auctions for their ongoing support. One year down the line, this latest project should provide a timely boost to our fund-raising. The proceeds will be sent to us direct from the mart and, importantly, the funds raised will again support farming families in the region of the market.”

The Addington Fund has a local trustee in Christine Ryder, who farms with her husband Chris – himself a familiar face at Skipton Auction Mart – at Scaife Hall Farm in Blubberhouses. The couple have themselves raised some £25,000 over the years for the cause through charity breakfasts staged at their award-winning bed and breakfast accommodation.

Mrs Ryder said: “The Addington Fund continues to do sterling work in helping to maintain the economic and social fabric of UK farming communities. Once again, every penny raised will be used to support Yorkshire farming families.”


New Holland supports Addington Fund with Cumbrian barn conversion

 New Holland Agriculture has announced its on-going support of the Addington Fund, by helping the charity to renovate two barns in Cumbria for the benefit of the local agricultural community. The two barns will add to Addington’s affordable housing scheme, which can also support farm workers.

The stone barns, in the village of Crosthwaite near Kendal, have been donated by local resident Mrs Peter Cartmell and will be converted into one single storey one-bed and a two-storey three bed dwellings. The cottages will be used to house tenanted farming families wishing to retire from their farm, or due to health or financial reasons need to make an exit.

New Holland supported Addington Fund in 2016 by sponsoring Surrey Cow Parade cow ‘Moo Holland’. The decorated fibreglass cow was part of a public art exhibition to raise money for charitable causes and community projects. Moo Holland was auctioned at the end of the parade to raise money for Addington, and was purchased by New Holland dealer Lloyd Ltd.  She now resides at Lloyd Ltd’s head office.

Moo Holland was on public display at the Lloyd Ltd stand at the Westmorland show, on 14th September, where Addington Fund is the show’s chosen charity for 2017. Lloyd Ltd’s stand was also where New Holland handed over a cheque to Christine Ryder, Addington Fund Trustee, and Sheila Cole, Addington Fund Chairman.

Mark Crosby, Marketing Manager at New Holland UK and Ireland, said: “We are delighted to be continuing our support for the Addington Fund, a charity that does great work in supporting the agricultural community. The two barns will provide tangible assistance to farming families and we look forward to seeing the renovations complete and the new tenants in place.”

The ever-increasing cost of rural housing makes it very difficult for many tenant farmers wishing to retire, or when an accident or illness can mean a family can no longer farm.  We are also supporting younger families who are starting out with some land and buildings, but no home.

“Mrs Peter Cartmell has been exceedingly generous with her donation of two wonderful stone barns to Addington.  The National Park Authority has granted planning permission and we are working with H M Architecture of Kendal. We anticipate starting the conversion work in spring 2018, with the aim of completing in autumn 2018.”

Provenance Heroes event highlights need for transparency across food chain

Happerley, the food provenance pioneers will be hosting a Provenance Heroes event at its Gloucestershire base in Apperley, on Wednesday 20th September in aid of the Addington Fund farming charity.

Over 200 of the country’s leading food industry visionaries and influencers will gather to champion a bright and sustainable future for independent farmers, food producers and consumers by putting transparency, connectivity and provenance to the fore. It is hoped the event will forge some ground-breaking alliances and relationships across the food chain.

Matthew Rymer, a farmer himself, launched Happerley with fellow farmer, hotelier and cattle producer Clifford Freeman when it became apparent that the lack of traceability in the food chain was letting down both producers and consumers. He explains: “We want to give consumers the truth behind the food they buy in the shops or eat in pubs and restaurants. I think we all have a right to know where our food comes from and that isn’t the case now.

“Farmers and producers with integrity who work hard to produce some of the best food available aren’t supported by a means of proving authenticity. This means all their investment and commitment to a quality product is devalued.

“With Happerley certification we are giving them the means to show the world the truth behind their food, and by seeing the Happerley logo, consumers can check through the journey of every food product they buy from a joint of meat to a bottle of gin.”

The Provenance Heroes event is sponsored by The Midcounties Co-operative, the first retailer to trial a pilot scheme with its suppliers which documents the whole provenance of selected food products from seed or birth to end product. It is also supported by Folk2Folk peer lending and the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester.

Peter Jinman OBE to chair the Happerley Advisory Board

Happerley is delighted to announce that Peter Jinman, OBE B Vet Med, Dip Arb, FCIArb, MRCVS, ARAgS is to chair the Happerley Advisory Board.

Peter recently completed a term as Non-executive director of Assured Food Standards (Red Tractor) and is Chairman of Defra’s Farm Animal Welfare Committee. He was a past President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the British Veterinary Association, and Member of the House of Commons Standards Committee. He will be Chair of The Farmers Club in 2018.

He explains: “I look forward to bringing my experience and insights into helping Happerley become a trusted and credible connection to validate ingredient differentials across the food industry”.

Founder, Matthew Rymer [right] welcomes the appointment: “Happerley, although started by farmers, is a legacy project with the sole objective of providing a neutral platform to enable a transparent and connected food industry for the benefit of all. Critical to this is working closely to complement and support existing and future food assurance schemes. Peter will be invaluable as we reach out.”

1.To review and refine terms and conditions of membership, certification and passporting for the benefit of the whole food industry, consulting to The Happerley Council, comprising Founder Members.
2.Oversee its transition into a producer owned co-operative by electing a Board at the point Happerley Limited provides necessary funding

Happerley Limited has three objectives:
1. To develop, deliver and support the technology, and execute the auditing and certification processes to enable and reward honesty and transparency in the food industry for the benefit of all. This is to be achieved by validating and publishing supply chains, and passporting the provenance of food stuffs and so empowering the consumer to know the journey of their food

2. To develop and refine the certification terms and conditions and procedures under the guidance of The Happerley Advisory Board

3. To enshrine the sustainable and assured neutrality of Happerley by providing The Happerley Advisory Board the required resources and perpetual licenses to become a producer owned co-operative, owned by its members, operating in the UK. This transition is to take place at the point at which Happerley Limited has returned founder shareholder investments and is operating at a surplus.

Welcome to our new Trustee

Chairman Sheila Cole with Peter Snodgrass

Peter Snodgrass is an Agricultural Lawyer and has been practicing for 22 years, firstly at Burges Salmon in Bristol, then in Stratford upon Avon for a firm now called Shakespeare Martineau.

He specialises in land and property issues, in particular agricultural holdings and family farming partnerships. He finds working with farmers very stimulating, often inspiring and sometimes very amusing.  He is grateful to be working in this sector with such interesting people, and is only surprised that more lawyers do not devote themselves to agriculture.

Peter is a Christian and has been a trustee of his local Baptist church.  He is married with three children.  Aside from his day job, he enjoys hill-walking, and plays (in amateur manner) the horn in the Stratford Symphony Orchestra and chess for the Stratford Chess Club.

He very much looks forward to working with the other trustees and staff to further the Fund’s objectives.
